Overview: "Learn key lessons from CAT 2024 exam trends to refine your CAT 2025 prep strategy and boost your chances of scoring a top percentile."

The CAT 2025 exam is scheduled for 30th November 2025 and will be held in three slots across various exam centres nationwide.

  • At this stage of your CAT preparation, understanding the exam trends from CAT 2024 can give you a major advantage.
  • By analysing what worked last year, you can fine-tune your strategy and supercharge your preparation for CAT 2025.

In this guide, we’ll cover the key lessons from CAT 2024 exam trends and how they impact each section — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA).

Knowing these patterns will help you plan smarter and perform better on exam day.

Understanding the VARC Section Trends

The VARC section tests your language and reading skills. Success here often depends on your reading speed and comprehension. Let's look at what CAT 2024 showed us.

Reviewing CAT 2024 VARC Section

The CAT 2024 VARC section had four Reading Comprehension (RC) passages. Most of these passages were of moderate difficulty. Very few questions were truly hard.

Out of 16 RC questions, you could aim to solve about 12 if you prepared well. This means that Reading Comprehension is a major part of your score.

Beyond RCs, there were individual questions. These questions also contribute to your overall score. Some were TITA (Type In The Answer) questions.

You should always try to attempt TITA questions. They do not have negative marking.

Important VARC Study Plan for CAT 2025

Your study strategy for VARC should focus heavily on RCs. This is where most of your marks will come from.

Day/Period

Activity/Focus

Practice Reading Comprehension Daily

Spend most weekdays, like Monday to Friday, practicing RC passages.

Weekend Focus on Other Topics

On Saturdays and Sundays, practice other VARC question types.

Para Summary

Read a paragraph and find its main idea.

Sentence Fit

Find the best place for a given sentence within a paragraph.

Odd One Out

Identify the sentence that does not fit with the main idea of a paragraph.

These individual questions can take more time. Sometimes, even after spending a lot of time, they remain unsolved. RCs often provide all the information you need right in front of you. Focus on these core areas.

Understanding the DILR Section for CAT 2025

The Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) section can be unpredictable. CAT 2024 showed varied questions across different exam slots.

The structure of the section often remains similar. You might see three sets with four questions each and two sets with five questions each. However, the topics for these sets change a lot.

Reviewing CAT 2024 DILR Trends

There was low predictability for DILR topics in CAT 2024. Let's look at the variety:

Slot

Question Type / Topics Covered

Highlights / Key Differences

Slot 1

  • Two calculation-based sets
  • One numerical reasoning set
  • One games and tournament set
  • One Venn diagram set

Included multiple calculation-heavy sets and a good mix of reasoning-based and logical puzzles.

Slot 2

  • One calculation-based set (different from Slot 1)
  • Arrangement-based questions (unique from Slot 1)
  • One routes and networks question
  • One average-based question using QA concepts
  • Featured more conceptual reasoning and QA-linked logic questions.
  • Less calculation-heavy compared to Slot 1.

Slot 3

  • Two conventional DI sets (based on percentage and percentage change)

Focused on classic DI sets and data interpretation rather than reasoning; overall tone was different from the other slots.

This wide variety means you cannot rely on just one or two types of DILR problems.

Your DILR Study Plan for CAT 2025

For DILR, your practice must be broad. Focus on solving many different types of sets.

DILR Study Focus Area

Details / Strategy

Practice Many Set Types

  • Solve 15–20 sets for each major type: calculation-based
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Games and tournaments
  • Venn diagrams, arrangements
  • Routes and networks, and conventional DI.
  • Broader exposure builds versatility.

Daily Set Solving

Try to solve one set of each type daily. This helps maintain consistency and keeps all skills sharp.

Cycle Through Categories

  • If daily practice of every type isn’t possible, create a 2–3 day rotation cycle.
  • Solve 1–2 sets from each category per cycle, then repeat. This ensures balanced coverage.

Focus on Conventional DI

  • Give special attention to conventional DI sets involving calculations and percentages.
  • These are scoring opportunities — rely more on accuracy than logic-heavy reasoning.

The key to DILR is consistent and varied practice. Prepare for any type of set that might appear.

Understanding CAT QA Section Trends

The Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section is the third part of the CAT exam. Many students feel tired by this point. After solving two sections, your mind can feel drained. This mental fatigue is common.

Building Mindset for CAT QA Section

To fight mental fatigue, you need to practice. The CAT exam is 2 hours long. You should practice studying for 3 hours straight every day.

Study Strategy

Description / Purpose

Daily 3-Hour Study Slots

Dedicate three hours daily for continuous study. Helps train your mind and body for long focus sessions similar to the actual CAT exam.

Breaks are Okay

After each 3-hour session, take a 1–2 hour break to recharge and avoid burnout.

Repeat Sessions

If possible, do three 3-hour sessions — morning, afternoon, and night — to build exam-like stamina and consistency.

When you can use your brain for 3 hours continuously during practice, the 2-hour CAT exam will feel less tiring.

CAT 2024 QA Analysis: Focus on Core Areas

Analysis of CAT 2024 and previous years shows a clear trend. Arithmetic and Algebra are the most important topics for QA. This has been a consistent message.

  • Arithmetic is for Everyone: Whether you have a math background or not, everyone should practice Arithmetic. These questions are usually solvable.
  • You can expect about seven Arithmetic questions. If you solve these with high accuracy, you can easily score above the 90th percentile.
  • Algebra for All Levels:
    • Non-Math Background: Pick easier topics within Algebra. Do a partial study of Geometry, Mensuration, and Trigonometry. Cover simple concepts in Numbers.

Math Background: Aim to complete all topics in Algebra. Study Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, and Numbers thoroughly.

What Not to Stress About for the CAT 2025?

Some areas have less weight in the CAT exam.

  • Modern Math: Over the last five to six years, Modern Math usually has only one or two questions, sometimes three.
  • This includes Permutations, Combinations, Probability, and Set Theory. If you haven't started this topic yet, you can probably skip it.
  • The exam is unlikely to change this trend suddenly. You are already preparing for Set Theory and Venn Diagrams in DILR, so no need for separate study here.

Focus your efforts where they matter most. This will help you manage your time and energy effectively.

Conclusion

Preparing for CAT 2025 means understanding past trends and building smart strategies. Focus your VARC efforts on Reading Comprehension.

Practice a wide variety of DILR sets, especially conventional DI. For QA, build stamina and prioritize Arithmetic and Algebra.

Remember, consistent effort and smart practice are your best tools. Keep your health and fitness in mind throughout your preparation. Study hard and stay focused.
