IIM CAP Admission Process 2026: Step Wise Process

Here is the simple step-wise process of shortlisting the candidate and the roadmap to final admission process during IIM CAP admission 2026:

Step Process Details
Step 1 Shortlisting by Individual IIMs Each new IIM shortlists candidates independently, 10-12 times the intake for MBA 2026.
This may lead to multiple calls for the same candidate if they meet the criteria for several IIMs.
Step 2 Shortlist Sent to CAP Coordinator Each IIM sends its shortlist to the CAP 2026 coordinating IIM.
Step 3 Final List of Shortlisted Candidates The coordinating IIM compiles the lists from all participating IIMs and creates the final list for CAP 2026 calls. Over 20,000 candidates are expected to receive CAP calls.
Step 4 Participation in the PI Process Candidates participate in the Personal Interview (PI) round. The Written Abilities Test (WAT) and Group Discussion (GD) are not conducted.
The PI is held online instead of at the 5 CAP centres (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata).
Step 5 Scores Sent to Participating IIMs Based on the PI performance, the coordinating IIM prepares CAP scores and sends them to all participating IIMs.
Step 6 Final Admission List by IIMs Each IIM uses its own criteria to prepare the final admission list, considering CAT scores, CAP scores, and sometimes the applicant's profile. Admission offers may vary between IIMs.

Merit List and Offer of Admission

After selection, participating IIMs release the final merit list of candidates selected for admission. Candidates admitted receive admission offers from the respective IIMs and must validate their acceptance by paying the requisite fees within the specified deadline.

1. Seat Allocation

  • Once the acceptance deadlines are over, the participating IIMs conduct a seat allocation process to fill the available seats in their respective management programs.
  • You who have been admitted but have yet to confirm their acceptance within the deadline may forfeit their seats, which are then allocated to other deserving candidates.

2. Waitlist Movement

  • Waitlisted people may receive admission offers if seats become available due to withdrawals or non-acceptance of offers by others.
  • The waitlist movement typically continues until all available seats are filled or until the end of the academic term.

IIM Common Admission Process (CAP) 2026 has introduced some pivotal rules that redefine your path to joining the elite New IIMs:

  • The process has been streamlined to make your admission journey smoother and more unified. Unlike in the past, individual IIMs are stepping back from preparing their shortlists based on CAP cutoffs Instead of a common shortlist.
  • Requests for changes in the CAP centre must be communicated early, specifically by the last week of January or the first week of February 2026.
  • Each IIM will integrate your PI score with other critical metrics, such as your CAT 2025 score and profile score, to compile its unique merit list.
  • Participating in the CAP 2026 is non-negotiable for all shortlisted candidates.
