Earlier, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was known as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. This institute was established in 1936. In 1944, the institute was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

At the beginning of social work education in India in 1936, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust established the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work with only 20 students.

Now, this institute has 4 campuses all around India. These 4 campuses are situated in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad.
