Parliament Passes Bankers’ Book Evidence Bill 2026

Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shruti Launched

Widow and Orphan Cess on Fuel Begins in Himachal Pradesh

In the News: The Himachal Pradesh Government has introduced a Widow and Orphan Cess of 60 paise per litre on petrol and high-speed diesel. The levy came into effect from 11 August 2026, with the revenue intended to support welfare measures for widows and orphaned children.

Lebanon Becomes First West Asian Country to Abolish Death Penalty

In the News: Lebanon’s Parliament approved legislation on 11 August 2026 to abolish the death penalty for all crimes and replace it with life imprisonment with hard labour. The move makes Lebanon the first West Asian country to legislatively abolish capital punishment for all offences.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Announces 2024 and 2025 Awards

In the News: The Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced its Fellowships, Akademi Awards and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2024 and 2025. The honours recognise distinguished and emerging artists across music, dance, theatre, folk and tribal arts, puppetry and allied performing arts.

• Prize Money: The Akademi Fellowship carries ₹3 lakh, while the Akademi Award carries ₹1 lakh. The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar carries a cash award of ₹25,000, along with other ceremonial honours.
• About Sangeet Natak Akademi: Established in 1953, it is India’s apex national institution for the promotion and preservation of music, dance and drama. It functions as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
