Goblin Mode’ is Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2022

  • The Oxford Word of the Year is the slang term "goblin mode". Oxford Languages opened its choice of 'Word of the Year' to public vote for the first time in its history.
  • Over the last two weeks, more than 300,000 people cast their votes.
  • The term "goblin mode" is often used to describe a type of behaviour that is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.

Maharashtra becomes first state in India to have a separate Divyang department

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced the setting up of a separate Divyang department for the welfare of differently abled people with a fund allocation of Rs 1,143 crore.
  • Maharashtra is the first state to have such a department, Shinde said while addressing an event in Mumbai to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons.
  • The Maharashtra government has created 2,063 posts for the new department which will formulate policies for the welfare of the disabled by taking into consideration views of the stakeholders

Cristiano Ronaldo signs 200-million euro contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is set to move to Saudi Arabia from the start of 2023 after agreeing a contract with Al-Nassr.
  • The initial deal will be around €100m (£86m) with advertisement and sponsorship bringing his wages to a record figure that will see him become the highest paid athlete in sport.
  • He recently became the first man to score at five different World Cups.

NSIC Signs MoU with Walmart

  • A Memorandum Of Understanding was signed between The National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. and Walmart Global Sourcing India Private Limited, to facilitate services to MSMEs in Walmart Vriddhi program.
  • Through this MoU, NSIC will be able to extend the NSIC schemes and other services to MSMEs which would participate in various Vriddhi programs. Moreover, the MSMEs would get the exposure to various advantages of gaining working capital, bulk procurement support etc. under various opportunities offered by NSIC.

Adani Green becomes world’s largest wind-solar hybrid power developer with 450 MW Rajasthan plant.

  • Adani Green stated that it has commissioned a 450 MW wind-solar hybrid power plant in Rajasthan. With the new hybrid plant in Jaisalmer, Adani Green Energy has the largest operational hybrid power generation capacity of 1,440 MW. AGEL has a total operational generation capacity of 7.17 GW, making it the largest wind-solar hybrid power farm developer.

Brazil and Croatia enter quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup

  • In the FIFA World Cup Football, Brazil crushed South Korea 4-1 and secured their spot in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals, in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha, Qatar.
  • Earlier, Croatia secured their spot in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Japan 3-1 on penalties after both sides were levelled 1-1 round of 16 draw at the end of scheduled playtime at the Al-Janoub Stadium, Qatar.
  • Croatian goalkeeper Livakovic saved three Japan spot-kicks, to send the 2018 finalists through to the last eight.

World No. 3 Sukant Kadam strikes gold at Peru Para Badminton International

  • Sukant Kadam smashed his way to a gold medal at the Peru Para-Badminton International, defeating ace shuttler defeated Singapore’s Chee Hiong Ang.
  • In the women’s category, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan and Mandeep Kaur clinched the titles in the SH6 & SL3 singles sections.
  • While Nithya overpowered Peru’s Giuliana Poveda Flores, Mandeep defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna.

BBC Releases 100 Most Influential Women’s List: 4 Indian women’s in the list

  • The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has published the list of 100 most influential women in the world and has included women from several areas such as politics, science, sports, entertainment, and literature.
  • The BBC’s 100 most influential women’s list also includes four Indians: Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, author Geetanjali Shree, engineer and astronaut Sirisha Bandla, and social worker Sneha Jawale.

‘Matiri Diwas’ marking recognition to Bangladesh by India celebrated in Dhaka

  • The 51st anniversary of ‘Maitri Diwas’ marking the recognition granted to Bangladesh by India in 1971 was celebrated in Dhaka on 6th December.
  • Liberation war fighters, Parliamentarians, members from civil society, media, dignitaries, and other prominent people took part in the event organised by the High Commission of India in Dhaka.

Armed Forces Flag Day 2022 

  • December 7 is marked as the Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day in India every year. The day is commemorated in order to honour the soldiers serving in India’s armed forces as well as the veterans. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new naval ensign that eschews the Union Jack and other colonial heritage of the past.
