This marks the first time that the famine classification has been applied to urban centres in the country’s ongoing conflict.
Key Points:
- Famine Declaration: Al Fashir and Kadugli have been classified as experiencing full famine—marked by extreme food consumption gaps, widespread acute malnutrition, and elevated mortality—since September 2025.
- Conflict & Siege: Both cities have been under extended siege Al Fashir trapped for about 18 months by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Kadugli by RSF-aligned SPLM-N forces—cutting off food, medical supplies and humanitarian access.
