Pamban Rail Bridge: An Engineering Marvel

The Pamban Rail Bridge, connecting Rameswaram on Pamban Island to the mainland of India, has undergone significant transformations over the years. The original bridge, opened in 1914, served the nation for over a century before its decommissioning in December 2022 due to structural concerns. A new bridge, featuring advanced engineering solutions, is set to be inaugurated on April 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    • The original Pamban Bridge, inaugurated on February 24, 1914, was India's first sea bridge, facilitating rail connectivity between the mainland and Rameswaram.

 WCD Report Highlights Climate Change's Disproportionate Impact on Women and Children

In the News:  The Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has released a report titled “"How Does Climate Change Impact Women and Children Across Agroecological Zones" examining how climate change disproportionately affects women and children across India's diverse agro-ecological zones. The findings reveal that climate-induced challenges exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, particularly for marginalized groups, and call for targeted interventions to mitigate these impacts.

  1. Heightened Vulnerability of Women and Children
  • Women and children are significantly more vulnerable during climate-related disasters, with women being 14 times more likely to lose their lives in such events than men.
  • Climate change intensifies risks such as malnutrition, health complications, child marriages, teenage pregnancies, and domestic violence.

  • India’s 20 agro-ecological zones face varying climate risks, including droughts, floods, and heatwaves.

Lakhpati Baideo Programme: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs in Assam

Launched by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, this ambitious scheme targets 40 lakh women members of self-help groups (SHGs), providing them with financial assistance and training to enhance their economic independence.

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to fly to International Space Station in May 2025

In the News: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, an esteemed officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF), has been selected as the Mission Pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than May 2025.

The mission is expected to involve a stay of up to 14 days aboard the ISS, during which the crew will engage in various scientific experiments and activities.

 Future Circular Collider: A Next-Generation Particle Accelerator

In the News: The Future Circular Collider (FCC) is a proposed particle accelerator project by CERN, designed to succeed the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2025 and push the boundaries of particle physics research. The FCC aims to address some of the most profound mysteries in physics, including dark matter and dark energy, by accelerating particles to unprecedented energies.

  1. Scale and Location: The FCC will be approximately 91 kilometers long, making it nearly three times larger than the LHC, which spans 27 kilometers. It will be constructed beneath the Swiss-French border, near Lake Geneva.
