Italy gets its first female PM as Giorgia Meloni claims victory

  • Giorgia Meloni looks set to become Italy’s first woman prime minister at the head of its most right-wing government since World War Two after leading a conservative alliance to triumph at the election. Meloni will take over from Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the former head of the European Central Bank, who pushed Rome to the centre of EU policy-making during his 18-month stint in office, forging close ties with Paris and Berlin. The Italian far-right leader Meloni party came top in general elections. Leading the next government, she will work for the betterment of all Italians.
  • Giorgia Meloni is an Italian politician and journalist who was born on 15 January 1977. Her father came from Sardinia and her mother belonged to Sicily. In 1992 at the age of 15, Meloni joined the Youth Front, the youth wing of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI). Next to this in 1996, she earned a diploma from the Amerigo Vespucci Institute. She has also served as a youth minister in Berlusconi’s 2008-2011 government before founding the Brothers of Italy in 2012. Three prominent political leaders Meloni, La Russa, and Crosetto founded a new political movement Brothers of Italy in 2012.

Centre launches Jaldoot app to capture groundwater levels across the country

  • In front of Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and MoS Panchayati Raj Kapil Moreshwar Patil, the JALDOOT App and JALDOOT App e-brochure was introduced by MoS for Rural Development and Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste. Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Rural Development collaborated to develop the JALDOOT app. Gram Rojgar Sahyak will be able to use the app to measure the water level of the well twice a year, before and after the monsoon.
  • Speaking to the crowd at the app launch event, Faggan Singh Kulaste urged the state governments, UTs, and gramme panchayats to use the newly released JALDOOT App to engage in systematic ground water level data collection and assimilation into a central digital database for analysis.
  • The ground water level in several sections of the country has decreased despite efforts to promote watershed development, afforestation, waterbody development and maintenance, and measures like rainwater collecting.
  • This JALDOOT App will make it easier to monitor water tables across the nation, and the information gathered can be used for the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Plans and Gram Panchayat Development Plans.
  • This JALDOOT App will be used all throughout the nation to record the water level of a village’s chosen one to three wells.
  • The pre-monsoon water level in open wells will be manually measured from May 1 to May 31 and the post-monsoon level for the same well will be manually monitored from October 1 to October 31.

Jhulan goswami retires from international cricket

  • The legendary Women’s Cricketer, Jhulan Goswami announced her retirement from all forms of the game in a touching farewell statement on September 25. Jhulan played her last international game at the Lord’s on the 24th, and she went out on a high note by helping India women defeat England women 3-0 in an ODI series.
  • Jhulan Goswami sent a parting message on social media, expressing her contentment with her lauded career. Jhulan concluded her career with 255 wickets from 204 games, an ODI women’s record.
  • Jhulan secured two wickets in her final match for India, which saw them defeat England by 16 runs while holding them to a 169-run goal.

  • The West zone has defeated the South zone by 294 runs to win their 19th title in the final day of the 2022 Duleep Trophy at the SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore. The 2022 Duleep trophy was the 59th season of the Duleep Trophy. Sarfaraz Khan scored the most runs with 127 runs for 178 balls and Jaydev Unadkat of the West zone became the player of the series. Yashasvi Jaiswal of the West zone scored 265 runs in the second innings which helped the west zone to hit a win while Kerala Opener Rohan Kunnummal scored 93 runs in the South zone’s second innings.

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge breaks own world record in Berlin Marathon victory

  • Eliud Kipchoge shattered his own world record on 25 September, with a time of 2:01:09 to win the Berlin marathon. It’s the second time the Kenyan runner has set the official men’s world record at the race in the German capital. Kipchoge’s previous best in an official 42.2km race was 2:01:39 set on the same course in 2018. Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa won the women’s race in a course record of 2:15:37, the third fastest time in history.
  • Kipchoge has long been dubbed the world’s best marathon runner. In 2019, he ran a marathon in Vienna in under two hours, a milestone long thought impossible. The result wasn’t official because he ran it under laboratory conditions, but the result made him an icon in and outside the running world. Kipchoge’s world record run in Berlin was so dominant that, after he crossed the finish line, he had time to hug his trainer, friends, pose for photos, and wave the Kenyan flag before the second-place runner finished, four minutes and 49 seconds later.

Veteran Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed dies in Kerala’s Kozhikode at 87

  • Former Kerala minister and senior Congress leader, Aryadan Muhammed has passed away at the age of 87. Muhammed, a prominent Muslim face of Congress in Kerala, had got elected to the state Assembly eight times from the Nilambur constituency in Malappuram. He had served as a minister for four terms. During the Congress regime from 2011 to 2016, he had been power minister in the Oommen Chandy government.
  • Muhammed joined Congress in 1952 and became a member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee in 1958. Later, he served as the president of the Malappuram district congress committee and had been a state leader of the INTUC, the trade union wing of Congress.
  • Within the Congress, Muhammed had been a prominent leader associated with the A group led by A K Antony. When A group of Congress had aligned with the CPI(M) in 1980, Muhammed became a minister in the then CPI(M) Government led by E K Nayanar.

World Rabies Day 2022: 28th September

  • According to the World Health Organisation, the theme of World Rabies Day 2022 is ‘Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths.’ The theme is to emphasize the connection between the environment, people, and animals. One Heath in the theme represents the vulnerabilities of the health system but also sheds light on how magnanimous they can achieve with collaboration across sectors. Zero Deaths means that the world has all the medicines, tools, vaccines, and technologies to eradicate the disease, and ‘zero deaths’ should be the end goal.
