Andhra Pradesh to Get 3 New Districts; Total Rises to 29

In the News:  The government of Andhra Pradesh approved the creation of three new districts — Polavaram, Markapuram and Madanapalle — thereby raising the total number of districts in the state from 26 to 29.

Key Points:

  • New Districts Approved: The newly approved districts are Polavaram (with its headquarters at Rampachodavaram), Markapuram, and Madanapalle.
  •  Total District Count Increases: With this decision, Andhra Pradesh’s district count increases from 26 to 29.
  • Administrative Restructuring Includes Revenue Divisions & Mandal: Alongside the districts, the government has approved formation of five new revenue divisions — namely Nakkapalli (in Anakapalli district), Addanki (in Prakasam), Pileru (in Madanapalle), Banaganapalle (in Nandyal), and Madakasira (in Sri Sathya Sai district). Additionally, a new mandal — Pedda Harivanam — will be formed by bifurcating Adoni mandal in Kurnool district.
  • Rationale for Reorganisation: The decision to carve out new districts and revenue divisions is driven by objectives of improved administrative convenience, better governance, and easier access to public services — particularly for residents in remote or previously underserved areas.
  • Pending Formal Notification: Although the proposals have been approved by the state government, formalisation of the new districts and revenue divisions requires final approval via a Cabinet meeting. Upon Cabinet approval, a gazette notification will be issued effecting the reorganisation.
  • Impact on Administrative Structure: With the addition of three districts, five revenue divisions, and a new mandal, the administrative map of Andhra Pradesh will be reorganized — potentially leading to reallocation of mandals or revenue divisions among neighbouring districts, boundary revisions, and a change in governance-and-development dynamics across many regions.

Constitution Day of India 2025: History, Timeline, Key Amendments & Landmark Judgments

In the News: Constitution Day across India saw widespread observance through public readings of the Preamble, educational events, and reaffirmation of constitutional values. The 2025 celebrations — under the theme “Hamara Samvidhan – Hamara Swabhiman” (Our Constitution – Our Pride) — aimed to deepen constitutional awareness among citizens and honour the legacy of the Constitution that binds India as a sovereign democratic republic.

Key Points:

  • History & Significance: Constitution Day of India, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed every year on 26 November to mark the day on which the Constitution of India was formally adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1949. Though the Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950, making India a republic, 26 November was chosen to honour the solemn adoption and the foundational act of constitutional creation.
  • Timeline of Key Events: 26 November 1949: The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India, finalizing nearly three years of rigorous deliberation and drafting. 26 January 1950: The Constitution came into force; India became a sovereign democratic republic — a date now celebrated as Republic Day of India. Before 2015: 26 November was observed largely as “National Law Day”, with legal and civic commemorations. 19 November 2015: The Government of India officially notified that 26 November would henceforth be celebrated as Constitution Day, to mark the 125th birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar and to promote constitutional literacy nationwide. 26 November 2025: The 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution is observed nationwide, with events, readings, and awareness campaigns under the 2025 theme “Hamara Samvidhan – Hamara Swabhiman.

Over time, several amendments have been made to adapt to changing social, political and economic circumstances — testifying to the flexibility and foresight of the constitutional design.
  •  Landmark Judgments & Constitutional Legacy: Among the most important legal milestones in India’s constitutional history is the case Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala (1973), in which the Supreme Court of India affirmed what is now known as the Basic Structure Doctrine. In a narrow majority verdict, the Court held that while Parliament has wide powers under Article 368 to amend the Constitution, these powers are not unlimited: Parliament cannot amend or destroy the “basic structure” or essential features of the Constitution.
