Indore to become the country's first "smart City" with digital address

  • This year, Indore will create history by implementing a fully digital addressing system, making it the first city in India to do so. The smart city advanced significantly when a memorandum of understanding was signed with the firm Pataa Navigations. The Memorandum of Understanding is signed by Rajat Jain, co-founder of Pataa Navigations, and Rishav Gupta (IAS), CEO of Indore Smart City.
  • Pataa has developed patented technology and is working with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to develop a digital addressing system for the nation.
  • Additionally, the user has the option to record voice instructions, which eliminates the need to repeat the address over the phone and makes it simpler for the guest to find the location. In the future, the user will be able to share a short code rather than sharing their lengthy and whole address with everybody, which is a huge benefit of anything like this.

Jharkhand Govt Raises OBC Reservations in State Govt Jobs to 27% from 14%

  • Jharkhand Government agreed to the proposal for granting 77 percent reservation in state government jobs for the SC, ST, Backward Classes, and OBC and further economically weaker sections. The chief minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren hiked the OBC reservation to 27 percent which was earlier 14 percent. The Jharkhand Government also accepted the proposal to use the 1932 land records to determine those who are local inhabitants.
  • The decision of granting reservation was taken in the backdrop of tribals’ demand that the last land survey is conducted by the British government in 1932.
  • The development came amid a political crisis in Jharkhand over the threats to Chief Minister Hemant Soren of his disqualification as an MLA.
  • The state government will also request the center to the inclusion of the bill in the Ninth schedule of the constitution.

Sikkim govt hikes minimum wage for unskilled workers by 67% to Rs 500

  • The Sikkim government hiked the minimum wage for unskilled workers by 67 percent to Rs 500. The daily wage for unskilled laborers was Rs 300 which is now increased to Rs 500 with retrospective effect from 11th July 2022. The daily wage for semi-skilled workers was increased from Rs 320 to Rs 520. The skilled laborers or workers will now get Rs 535, which was earlier Rs 335. Highly skilled labor will be paid Rs 565 per day, instead of Rs 365 per day.
  • These updated wages will be applicable for laborers who are working at altitudes up to 8,000 feet.
  • 50 percent more wages will be given to those working at altitudes from 8,001 feet to 12,000 feet.
  • The laborers working in the altitudes of 12,001 feet to 16,000 feet will be paid 75 percent more than the normal wage.

Roger Federer announces retirement from tennis

  • Roger Federer will retire next week at the age of 41 after the Laver Cup in London, marking the end of one of the greatest ever sporting careers.
  • A 20-time grand slam champion, Federer announced in a social media post on Thursday that next week will be his last as a professional player. Federer’s management firm, Team8, are founders of the Laver Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event.
  • “The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour,” he wrote.
  • Federer has not competed since Wimbledon last year when he lost 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0 in the quarter-final to Hubert Hurkacz and it emerged he had reinjured the knee that had kept him out of the tour for more than a year. Federer has contested five events since January 2020 and has undergone three knee surgeries in that period. He cited his late-career injury problems as the reason for his retirement.

India beats Nepal 4-0 to lift SAFF U-17 Championships title

  • In the SAFF U-17 Championship Title, India beats Nepal with 4-0 in the finals. The SAFF U-17 Championship final was held in Racecourse International Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka. In the group league, India defeated Nepal 3-1, however, in the finals, India took the opportunity and defeated Nepal with a leading charge.
  • Indian team got off blocks early in the match, looking to find gaps in the Nepal defense. India managed to get the lead in the 18th minute of the match.

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2022: 16th September

  • World Ozone Day or the International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on the 16th of September. The day aims to create awareness about the importance and need of the Ozone layer which is the single protection on Earth against UV rays coming out from the sun. The UN Environment Programme also aims to bring awareness about the importance of getting rid of the substances that damage the ozone layer. It also calls for taking time-targeted actions to protect Earth’s protective shield.
  • he theme announced by the UN Environment Programme for International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2022 is ‘Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth’.
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 1994. This was done to commemorate the date of the signing of the ‘Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer’ by the governments of 46 nations around the world in 1987. It was also known as the “Montreal Protocol”.

PM Modi to meet Putin, Jinping on the sidelines of SCO summit 2022 in Samarkand

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which is set to deliberate on regional security challenges, boosting trade and energy supplies among other issues. The SCO is holding its first in-person summit in Samarkand in Uzbekistan after two years. The summit will also see the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, including with Putin, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev among other leaders.
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived at the Samarkand Airport in Uzbekistan to attend the SCO Summit. He is among the several world leaders expected to attend the summit, including India’s Narendra Modi, China’s Xi Jinping, and Iran’s Ebrahim Raisi. Putin met China’s leader, Xi Jinping, on Thursday in their first in-person meeting since Russia invaded Ukraine, and as Xi travelled abroad for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
  • Russia can supply gas to Pakistan as necessary infrastructures are already in place, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday during his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Uzbekistan.
  • Modi, who will attend the summit Friday along with China President Xi Jinping, Russia President Vladimir Putin, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iran President Ebrahim Raisi.

Andhra Pradesh tops India in attracting investment, gets Rs 40,361 cr till July

  • Andhra Pradesh has ranked one on the list of states in attracting industrial investments in the first seven months of 2022. According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Andhra Pradesh has generated an investment of Rs 40,361 crore. Andhra Pradesh stood at 45 percent of the total investment that the entire country got from January to July 2022. India got a total investment of Rs 1,71,285 crore by the end of July as per the DPIIT data.
  • Andhra Pradesh rolled out its new ‘industrial Development Policy 2022-2023’ which focuses on a sustainable development model of growth, Infrastructure development, and asset creation. The Industrial Development Policy 2020-2023 aims to improve the ease of doing business and incentivize high-value additional industrial investments. In July 2022, Karnataka generated an investment of Rs 3712 crore, Gujarat generated an investment of Rs 2969 crore, and Odisha generated an investment of Rs 1493 crore.

Fitch Ratings cuts India’s growth forecast to 7% from 7.8% for FY23

  • Fitch Ratings slashed India’s GDP growth projection for FY23 to 7 per cent, saying the economy is expected to slow against the backdrop of the global economy, elevated inflation and high-interest rate. In June, it had forecast 7.8 per cent growth for India. As per official GDP estimates, the Indian economy expanded 13.5 per cent in the June quarter, higher than the 4.10 per cent growth clocked in January-March. The RBI expects the economy to grow 7.2 per cent in the current fiscal year.
  • “We expect the economy to slow given the global economic backdrop, elevated inflation and tighter monetary policy. We now expect the economy to grow 7 per cent in the financial year to end-March 2023 (FY23) from 7.8 per cent previously, with FY24 also slowing to 6.7 per cent from 7.4 per cent before,” Fitch said in its September edition of the Global Economic Outlook.
  • The wholesale-price-based inflation softened to an 11-month low of 12.41 per cent in August, even though retail inflation inched up to 7 per cent.

SBI Raises Benchmark Lending Rate By 0.7% To 13.45%, Effective From Sep 15

  • The country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), raised the Benchmark Prime Lending Rate (BPLR) by 70 basis points (or 0.7 per cent) to 13.45 per cent. The announcement would make loan repayment linked to BPLR costlier. The current BPLR rate is 12.75 per cent. It was revised last in June.
  • “Benchmark Prime Lending Rate (BPLR) revised as 13.45 per cent per annum with effect from September 15, 2022,” the SBI posted on its website.
  • Now most of the banks provide loans on the External Benchmark Based Lending Rate (EBLR) or the Repo-Linked Lending Rate (RLLR).
  • The increase in the benchmark lending rates comes weeks ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) monetary policy meeting, which is again expected to hike rates to tame inflation.
