For a full breakdown of which exam suits you, read IPMAT Indore vs IPMAT Rohtak.
These three are frequently misunderstood. Each one has a separate role to play in your preparation, and it is important to use them in the correct order if you are to avoid wasting your efforts and achieve efficient preparation.
Here's the simple rule: to develop topics, use IPMAT sample papers, use previous years' questions to get a clear understanding of the actual exam, and use mock tests to prepare for the day of the exam. All three are necessary not just one.
Have a look at the IPMAT exam cutoffs from previous years listed below. Remember that for IPMAT Indore, you have to pass each section separately, not just the total score.
| Section | 2026 | 2025 | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quant (SA) | 28 | 24 | 24 | 12 |
| Quant (MCQ) | 27 | 28 | 35 | 39 |
| Verbal Ability | 111 | 112 | 113 | 125 |
Here's how to use this: If you're solving an older PYQ (for example, the one from 2023), it's not enough just to look at your total score—you should also verify whether you would have met that year's sectional cutoff. Back then, having a good overall score but with one weak section wouldn't have resulted in a call.
The difficulty level by year, according to the reviews of top performers and expert evaluation. The term "good attempts" refers to the number of questions that a capable candidate usually answers correctly.
Good-attempt ranges for 2020 and 2021 are lower because those years had only 60 questions.
Always read scores in the context of that year's total. For deeper year-wise breakdowns, see IPMAT Question Paper Analysis & Solutions.
| Year | QA (SA) | QA (MCQ) | Verbal Ability | Overall | Good Attempts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Moderate | Moderate | Easy | Easy–Moderate | 65–72 |
| 2020 | Moderate | Moderate | Easy–Moderate | Moderate | 42–48 |
| 2021 | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | 40–46 |
| 2022 | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | 60–65 |
| 2023 | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | 58–65 |
| 2024 | Easy | Moderate–Difficult | Easy–Moderate | Moderate | 60–68 |
| 2025 | Moderate | Moderate–Difficult | Easy–Moderate | Moderate | 56–64 |
| 2026 | Moderate | Moderate–Difficult | Moderate | Moderate–Difficult | 52–60 |
After analysing IPMAT Previous Year Papers from 2019–2026, these are the topic-wise frequency trends. Prioritise the high-frequency topics first.
| Topic | Avg. Questions/Year |
|---|---|
| Topic | Avg. Questions/Year |
| Algebra (Linear & Quadratic Equations, Functions) | 12–15 |
| Arithmetic (%, Profit-Loss, Time-Work, SI-CI) | 8–10 |
| Number Systems & Number Theory | 5–7 |
| Geometry & Mensuration (2D & 3D) | 4–6 |
| Progressions (AP, GP, HP) | 3–5 |
| Logarithms & Functions | 3–5 |
| Probability & Permutation-Combination | 3–4 |
| Set Theory | 2–3 |
| Coordinate Geometry | 2–3 |
Since Algebra alone can account for a seventh of the QA weight, mastering algebra for IPMAT offers one of the best returns on your study time.
| Topic | Avg. Questions/Year |
|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | 12–18 |
| Para Jumbles | 5–8 |
| Vocabulary (Synonyms, Antonyms, One-Word Substitution) | 4–6 |
| Grammar & Error Spotting | 4–6 |
| Fill in the Blanks (Grammar-based) | 3–5 |
| Sentence Completion & Improvement | 3–4 |
| Cloze Test | 2–4 |
A good way of finding out more about the expectations of the exam is to work through last year's IPMAT Indore question paper.
You can also learn ways of improving your preparation in order to do so. Nevertheless, that isn't the end of the story.
There are a lot of ways this practice can benefit you:
The IPMAT exam pattern changes slightly every year, so solving the IPMAT previous year question paper with solutions can help you get a good idea of the format, syllabus and the types of questions asked in the exam.
By analysing question papers of the IPMAT exam, you can identify the important IPMAT topics and questions that are likely to be repeated in the exam. This can help you prioritise your study plan and focus on the topics that carry more weightage.
The IPMAT exam often features tricky and unconventional questions, so practising with question papers for the IPMAT exam can help you get familiar with the style of questions asked in the exam.
The IPMAT exam has a strict time limit, and solving IPMAT previous year question papers can help you improve your time management skills. By practising regularly, you can learn to manage your time effectively and allocate the right amount of time to each question.
Solving IPMAT previous year papers can help you build confidence and reduce exam stress. It can help you become familiar with the exam format and feel more comfortable while taking the actual exam.
So, if you’re serious about acing IPMAT, practising with previous years' sample papers of IPMAT is the way to go if you want to ace the IPMAT exam.
Just going through a IPMAT previous year question paper and then checking your score is not sufficient; genuine improvement is achieved only when you review your attempts, understand your errors, and address them before working on the next paper.
Here’s a practical way to use IPMAT previous year papers effectively:
Before you start, arrange the conditions to match a real exam. Use a timer and stick to the 40-minute time limit for each section. Keep your phone at a distance, avoid taking any breaks, and attempt to finish the paper in the same way that you would on the day of the exam.
This will give you a much clearer picture of your current speed, accuracy, and time management.
When you have completed the paper, work out your score by using the relevant marking scheme; for those sections which include multiple-choice questions, take account of the negative marking where it applies, whereas short answer questions usually have no negative marking.
You can likewise use the IPMAT Score Calculator to work out your score and compare your results with the cut-off for that year.
Do not merely flag a question as wrong and then go on to the next one; instead, attempt to determine the real reason for each error.
Was the idea not clear? Had you made a mistake in your calculation or in your reading of the problem? Or did you know how to solve it but run out of time?
After you have worked out why the problem occurred, repairing it is considerably simpler.
Maintain a simple error log while analysing each IPMAT question paper.
If the error was of a conceptual nature, then go through that topic once more. If it was a careless error, make a note of what went wrong so that you won't make the same mistake again.
If you had spent too long on a difficult question, you should focus on selecting your questions more carefully. You might also gain some insight into the art of skipping in order to improve your strategy for choosing questions.
After working on your weak areas, come back to the questions you previously got wrong or skipped. Try solving them again without looking at the solution.
A useful preparation cycle is:
Attempt → Analyse → Revise → Re-attempt
Following this process regularly will help you improve your accuracy, speed, and confidence with every IPMAT previous year paper you solve.
Here are the tips that you can follow to avoid mistakes while solving IPMAT PYPs:
Attempting every previous year paper under full timed, no-phone conditions; treating it like ordinary homework wastes its biggest advantage.
Give yourself the full time to attempt a tough question before looking at the answer key. Peeking early trains guessing, not problem-solving.
Finishing a paper and moving on without reviewing every wrong or skipped question means you repeat the same mistakes on the next paper.
IPMAT enforces strict sectional time limits; practising without a section-wise timer won't prepare you for the real constraint.
When practising IPMAT previous year papers, it is better to start with the most recent papers and then move backwards. This helps you first get familiar with the latest question style, difficulty level, and exam structure.
Attempt these first because they are the closest to the current exam format. Use your first paper to understand where you currently stand and which areas need more work.
These papers will give you more practice with recent question types and help you check whether your speed and accuracy are improving.
Use it for additional practice and to expose yourself to a wider variety of questions.
Since the paper structure was different, avoid comparing the raw scores directly with recent papers. Instead, focus on solving the questions correctly and identifying weak concepts.
This paper can be particularly useful when you want more questions to strengthen your Quantitative Ability preparation.
Once you have covered the main IPMAT papers, use these to practise more questions, especially from Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation.
