Venkaiah Naidu elected as the new Vice-President of India– The Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu is elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Saturday.

Venkaiah Naidu elected as the new Vice-President of India– The Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu is elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Saturday. Being a man with a charismatic personality, He was in the headlines when he stated Modi as “Maker of Developed India” and this was liked so much by BJP that its adaptation “Making of Developed India” was the new official line of the centre in its public outreach campaign.

“I am very humbled and thankful to the Prime Minister along with party leaders for their support. I will seek to utilise the vice-presidential institution to strengthen the hands of the president and secondly uphold the dignity of the Upper House”, says Naidu after his ardent victory.

On August 11th, Mr. Naidu, 68, will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Naidu has replaced Hamid Ansari, the ex- vice president who will retire on 10th of August 2017. When the results of the vice-president elections were out, PM Modi immediately expressed his contentment on twitter. He tweeted, wishing Naidu a “fruitful and motivating tenure”. Modi seems to be pretty confident with the fact that Naidu would “serve the nation as a diligent and dedicated vice-president and will contribute largely to the goal of nation building. Modi and BJP president Amit Shah also paid a visit to Naidu’s residence to congratulate him.

Vice President Elections 2017- Naidu’s Triumph

In the vice- presidential election 2017, 98% poll percentage was recorded

  • 771 out of 785 MPs voted in the election in which 11 votes were found to be invalid.
  • Mukul Pandey was the assistant returning officer for Vice-Presidential 2017.
  • Venkaiah Naidu defeated former West Bengal Governor and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi with 516 votes. Gandhi was the opposition candidate who got 244 votes.
  • M Venkaiah Naidu’s victory margin of 272 votes is the highest margin till date in any vice presidential election in the last three decades.
  • During the 2012 polls, incumbent Hamid Ansari had secured 490 to NDA nominee Jaswant Singh’s 238 votes, while in the 2007 With 516 votes, Vice-Presidential poll, Hamid Ansari had secured 456 votes; Najma Heptullah bagged 222 votes and Rashid Masood 075 votes.

Naidu was born in to an agricultural family in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Naidu, 68- year old, was interested in politics since his childhood days. In 1973, Naidu joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

  • Mr Naidu served as the Rural Development Minister in the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.In Modi’s government, he served the portfolios of Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development.
  • He will be the third vice-president from Andhra Pradesh. The list includes Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and VV Giri, both of whom later became President.
