Time Management Tips for GATE Exam

Do you really aim to crack the GATE exam with a good score? Because if you don’t have the burning passion and determination to crack it, nobody else can help you further. Make sticky notes and write down the GATE score you want to achieve. Stick it in a place you can see frequently.

Preparation Tips

  • Please start your preparation at least 6 months in advance. I have seen a number of candidates procrastinate and do nothing till the remaining last month. Do not make this mistake.
  • Some people say that college notes don’t help in preparing for GATE. But I don’t believe in it. If you listen attentively and understand the concepts during college, 50% of your work is done. After that, all you need to do is solve problems on that topic according to GATE question type.
  • A very crucial piece of advice I’d like to give you – attempt all the numerical questions where you need to enter a number with the keypad. These questions don’t have negative marking. If you are not sure, do not invest a lot of your time there. Just write some appropriate number you analyze could be the answer. When there is no negative marking, always cover those questions.
  • Also, you don’t need to study all the topics from the GATE syllabus. It will take a lot of time to cover the entire syllabus. Just note down the topics that have more weightage and are repeated often. And invest your time solving these problems while preparing for the exam.
  • Give Mock Tests on a daily basis, after you have completed the majority of the syllabus you want to cover. It will help you improve your speed and time-management skills.
  • Solve previous year papers during the last month.

Last Minute Tips

  • The most important question that we want to address here – How to attempt all the questions in the fixed period of time? Well, you don’t need to attempt all. Attempt those questions which you have practised well and are good at.
  • Since MCQs have negative marking, do not attempt those questions which you are not sure about. Do not waste your precious time in trying to solve something you can’t.
  • Furthermore, please note that there is no sectional cut off. And if you want to cross the GATE cut off easily, you need to attempt more questions from the section you are strong in.
  • Lastly, do get acquainted with the Virtual Calculator in advance. It will help you save precious time.
