What is the Pattern of SSC CGL Exam 2021?

There are four stages involved in the CGL exam: Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4. All four stages are qualifying in nature. As per the Exam Pattern of the SSC CGL 2021, Tier 1 and Tier 2 are of objective type paper while Tier 3 and Tier 4 are descriptive type paper. It is important for candidates to score above the SSC CGL Cut Off in Tier 1 exam to get shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process i.e., Tier 2.

SSC CGL Pattern Trends for Tier 1

  • 2015-16 - The Tier 1 Exam was initially conducted in offline mode. The exam was conducted for 1-2 hours. The marking scheme was 200 marks. 
  • 2016-17 - First time the Tier 1 and 2 were scheduled to be held in online mode. Negative marking was increased from 0.25 marks for each wrong answer to 0.50 marks in Tier-I Exam. The number of questions were 100 while the time duration was reduced from 120 minutes to 75 minutes. 
  • 2017-18 - The time duration was reduced from 75 minutes to 60 minutes.
  • 2018-19 - The normalization method was introduced for the first time to normalize the scores of students who appear for exams in different shifts.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern 2021

Candidates who will get qualify in the Tier-I exam are eligible to appear for the Tier- II Exam. The Tier-2 exam is a computer-based examination and the questions asked in the exam are of an objective type.   • CGL Tier 2 exam consists of a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer
  • The exam is conducted in online mode
  • Moreover, the time allotted to complete the paper is 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for PwD candidates)

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern Trends

Here is the list of changes introduced every year for Tier 2. 

  • 2015-16 - Three papers are introduced for Tier 3 i.e., Paper I (Quant) & Paper-II (English)], Paper-III (Statistics). 200 marks for English Section including 200 Questions + 200 marks allotted to Quantitative Aptitude Section for 100 Questions = 400 Marks in Total (300 Questions). 
  • For JSO Post: 400 Marks + 200 Marks For 100 Question (Paper III of Statistics): 600 Marks (400 Questions)
  • 2016-17 - Paper 4 Economics was introduced for AAO posts. 
  • 2019-20 - Tier 2 and Tier 3 are conducted simultaneously. Hence, candidates must prepare accordingly. 

SSC CGL Tier 2 Marking Scheme

  • The Tier 2 exam is conducted for a total of 800 marks. Each section carries 200 marks
  • The total number of questions is 500
  • There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.

SSC CGL Tier 3 Exam Pattern 2021

  • Tier 3 examination for SSC CGL is a descriptive exam to test the writing skills of the candidates in English/Hindi.
  • Furthermore, the examination will be conducted in offline mode
  • The exam lasts for 60 minutes.

SSC CGL Tier 3 Exam Pattern Trends

There were many changes introduced for SSC CGL Exam Pattern that are explained below

  • 2015-16 - There was segregation in Tier 3 conduction for many posts. For a few posts, there were only interviews for 100 marks while there was a Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test.
  • 2016-17 - It was the first time where the Tier 3 exam was conducted in pen and paper mode i.e., Descriptive mode of exam. The exam was conducted for 100 marks with 60 minutes time duration.
  • 2019-20 - This year, the Tier 3 exam will be evaluated if the candidate has qualified both Tier 1 and 2 above cut off marks.

SSC CGL Tier 4 Exam Pattern 2021

Through the DEST Test, the typing speed of the candidate will be tested as part of the Tier 4 Examination. Therefore, candidates are provided with an English article. Moreover, they will be required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes. CPT test is conducted to check a candidate's proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Generation of Slides. SSC CGL Tier 4 Exam Pattern Trends

Basically, the Tier-4 exam is a skill test.  In 2016-17, the Skill Test and Computer Proficiency Test was introduced which is qualifying in nature. The skill test which is conducted by the commission is of two types as explained below:

SSC CGL Data Entry Skill Test 2021

This test is conducted for candidates who have applied for Tax Assistants (Central Excise & Income Tax). The test includes typing at 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depression per hour on the computer. The skill test will be conducted for a passage of about 2,000 key depressions for a duration of 15 minutes. The test is of qualifying nature.

SSC CGL Computer Proficiency Test 2021

This test is conducted for candidates who have applied for:

  • Assistant Section Officer in CSS MEA and AFHQ
  • Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs
  • Assistant (GSI) in the Ministry of Mines
  • Inspector (Central Excise)
  • Inspector (Preventive Officer)
  • Inspector (Examiner) in CBEC

The test is qualifying in nature and includes 

  • Word Processing
  • Spread Sheet
  • Generation of Slides
