As we know, Distance = Time * Speed

It means that if a person is running at a speed of 20km/h and he runs for 2 hours, he will be covering a total distance of 40 km.

Distance = 20 * 2 = 40 km

  • Distance: When an object is moving with a certain speed at a particular time, the displacement made by an object called the distance.

Unit of Distance: Generally, Kilometer (Km) and meter (m)

  • Time: Time is a quantity which governs the order or sequence of an occurrence. In the absence of time, the actual sequence of any occurrence or incident would be lost.

Unit of Time: Hour and Second are mostly taken as the unit of time.

  • Speed: Speed is defined as the distance covered per unit time. In other words, it is the rate at which distance is covered.

Unit of Speed: Km/hour and Meter/second

Important Formulas for Speed Time Distance Problems 2020

  • Speed, Time and Distance:

Speed = Distance/Time , Time = Distance/Speed, Distance = Speed * Time2

  • km/hr to m/sec conversion:

x km/hr = x * 5/18 m/sec

  • m/sec to km/hr conversion:

x m/sec = x * 18/5 km/hr

  • If the ratio of the speeds of A and B is a: b, then the ratio of the times taken by them to cover the same distance is 1/a:1/b or b:a
  • Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x km/hr and an equal distance at y km/hr, then average the average speed during the whole journey is (2xy/x+y)km/hr

Relation between time, distance and speed when one of them is kept constant

    1. Speed is the constant distance covered by the object is directly proportional to the time taken.
    2. Time is constant speed is directly proportional to the distance travelled.
    3. Distance is constant speed is inversely proportional to the time taken.

Short Tricks to Solve Speed, Time, and Distance Problems

1) Speed is defined as the distance travelled per unit time.

Speed =Distance/Time

2) If same distance X is travelled at two different speeds S1 & S2, then average speed is calculated by,

Average Speed (Sa) =(2S1S2) / (S1 + S2)

3) Two bodies A and B move between two points P & Q. One starts from P and goes to Q while the other starts from Q and goes to P. They meet on the way and reach their destinations in time ta and tb respectively after the meeting . Their speeds Sa & Sb are given by,

S/ S=tbta

4) When two bodies move in the opposite direction, their speeds are added to find the relative speed.
SR = S1 + S2
5) When two bodies move in same direction, their speeds are subtracted to find the relative speed.
SR = S1 – S2
Conversion of Units
It is extremely important to pay attention to the units for each of the quantities given. At times, you may be required to convert the unit of speed from km per hr to metre per second or vice versa.
Converting km/hr into m/s

km/hr =1000 m / 60*60 sec = 5/18 m/s


20km/hr = 20 x (5/18)= 5.55 m/sec

Converting m/s into km/hr:

m/s=18/5 km/hrs 20 m/s= 20 x(18/5)= 72 km/hrs

– To convert minutes into seconds, multiply by 60
– To convert hours into seconds, multiply by 60 x 60

Answer & Explanation :
⇒ Raman’s speed = 20 km/hr = 20 × 5/18 = 50/9 m/sec
⇒ 400 × 9/50 = 1⅕ mins

Question: In a 100 m race A runs at a speed of 1.66 m/s. If A gives a start of 4m to B and still beats him by 12 seconds. What is the speed of B?

Answer & Explanation :

Time is taken by A to cover 100 meters = 60 seconds
⇒ A gives a start of 4 seconds then time takes by B = 72 seconds
⇒ B takes 72 seconds to cover 96 meters
⇒ Speed of B = 96/72 = 1.33 m/s

Question: If a person drives his car in the speed 50 miles per hour, how far can he cover in 2.5 hours?

Answer & Explanation:

Speed is 50 miles per hour.

So, the distance covered in 1 hour = 50 miles

Then, the distance covered in 2.5 hours = 2.5 * 50 miles = 125 miles

So, the person can cover 125 miles of distance in 2.5 hours

Question: If a person travels at a speed of 40 miles per hour. At the same rate, how long will he take to cover 160 miles distance?

Answer & Explanation:

Speed is 40 miles per hour

The formula to find the time when distance and speed are given is

Time  =  Distance / Speed

Time taken to cover the distance of 160 miles is

Time  =  160 / 40

Time  =  4 hours

So, the person will take 4 hours to cover 160 miles distance at the rate of 40 miles per hour

Question: A person travels at a rate of 60 miles per hour and covers 300 miles in 5 hours. If he reduces his speed by 10 miles per hour, how long will he take to cover the same distance?

Answer & Explanation:

Original speed is 60 miles per hour.

If the speed is reduced by 10 miles per hour, then the new speed = 50 miles per hour

Distance to be covered is 300 miles.

The formula to find time is

Time  =  Distance / Speed

Time taken to cover 300 miles distance at the speed of 50 miles per hour is

=  300 / 50 = 6 hours

So, if the person reduces his speed by 10 miles per hour, he will take 6 hours to cover 300 miles distance
