Railway Protection Force RPF Job Profile

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is a security force in India which is responsible for the protection of railway and its properties along with the passengers and passenger area. It is also a Group ‘A’ service for which officers can be recruited through the UPSC civil services examination. It is a paramilitary force (Central Armed Police Force, CAPF) which has the authority to arrest and prosecute criminals. The cadre controlling authority is the Director General, RPF and is under the Ministry of Railways. The Railway Protection force came into existence in the year 1954. The recruitment for the same through civil services was commenced in the year 1981.

Objectives

  • Dedicating all the time to protect the railway and its passengers from all the criminals
  • Ensure passengers’ safety by checking that there is no anti- social element in the passenger area
  • Cooperate with all the other departments of the Indian Railways in improving the efficiency of the Indian Railways
  • Synchronize all the activities between the Government Railway Police or Local Police and the railway administration

Recruitment RPF Officers

The Recruitment of RPF Officers or Railway Protection Force is carried out in three ways:

The first one which is the usual Civil Service Exam conducted by the UPSC commission every year, second is through upgrading the RPF Inspectors as per the RPF Recruitment Rules of 1994 and third is through recruitment of Ex-Army Officers to 10% position of Group ‘A’ officers.

The officers recruited through promotion from Group A are supposed to undertake foundation course and are trained in other different programs with the trainee officers recruited in Civil Service Exams. The whole period of probation is of almost two years and after the successful completion of the same, the officers who are selected for Railway Protection Force are confirmed. Also, the RPF Officers are provided with internal training during the service which is planned with Railways, DoPT and BPR&D.
