How to Prepare CAT 2017 in 4 Months  – Section Wise Study Plan

Let us see the detailed plan month-wise.

  1. Plan for Month 1:

The main objective of this monthly study plan is to help the students with their study plans and prepare accordingly in a systematic manner. This shows an outline about what has to be done during the 3 sections of Month 1.

  • Section 1: English (Verbal):

The first month of preparation comprises basics and focus would be on the three core skills driving one’s language development:

  • Reading Skills
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Grammar
  • Section 2: Quantitative Ability & Reasoning:

Target: Number System

Number System is the universal topic throughout the CAT. It is that topic, which is applied universally and the concepts are used in almost all the topics. Considering its importance, make sure you study the concepts in detail and refer as many materials as possible.

  • Basic Maths test: There are some Math related rules that could be recalled from your school books. Basic Maths test would help you make use of them once again. The simple 5 question test would prove your understanding about the subject.
  • Puzzles for CAT: Though this topic does not appear directly in the exam, puzzles do have an important role in showing the preparation strategy of the student. Solving puzzles would enhance the logical reasoning abilities; and the one-question problems would help in solving the full fledged LR questions.
  • Section 3: Vocabulary Builder:
    • Visual Vocab: This first half of Vocab Builder- Visual Vocab comprises 5-word posters provided on the daily basis. These are mixed according to the difficulty and their chances of appearing in the exams.
    • Flashcard sets: A Flashcard would be provided everyday comprising 10 words. These mobile-friendly cards could be viewed any time, which supports the current vocabulary database.
  • Reading Tips:
    • Always keep two books in hand, so reading only one book does not bore you.
    • Identify your level before you start reading and make sure you don’t cross the limits with the picks.
  1. Plan for Month 2:

During the second month, we would focus on the Basic concepts. Along with that, there would be English Section Tests available this month. You would be introduced to special RC module, covering the essential topic in CAT in detail. Unlike month-1, there would be materials added; i.e. the notes, tests, presentations etc. one at a time.

  • Section 1:English (Verbal)prep for the month:
  1. Summary writing: This is a topic holding a simple question- summarize the given text into one or two sentences. The paragraph summaries require a mix of understanding reading skills and certain guessing ability.
  2. Critical Reasoning: This topic is highly practical and requires a combination of logical skills, practical understanding good hold over the language.
  3. Para completion: This topic has found its permanent space in CAT exam. For the past few years, it has been included in the CAT exam and is one of the trickier parts of the exam. It requires high level of skill and a good command over language; and the questions in this section could be answered only if you read the comprehension completely.
  4. Basics of Reading Comprehension: This is the most important topic in the CAT English section. This topic covers 50% of the English section and they are mandatory. You could leave any other topic, but not to ignore RCs.
  • Section 2: Maths (Quant) :
    • Arithmetic: This is the second topic you would consider for the CAT test prep. After exploring Number System during Month 1 prep, where you developed an understanding about the usage of numbers. During the 2nd month prep, you would extend the learning to that topic in mathematics which is highly applicable in daily life. Arithmetic is quite important in CAT preparation; it is recommended that it should be studied in detail.
  • Section 3: Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation:
    • Logical Reasoning: The trick to solve Logical reasoning is by a diagrammatical representation of a problem and to fill in the given information. This is a flowchart approach and it has been quite effective. Solving such questions verbally would end up in confusion.
  • Section 3: Vocab Builder:
    • Visual Vocab: The first part of Vocab is the Visual Vocabulary, with 5 word posters provided every day. Though you may know some words, you still need to concentrate, as there would be plenty of other words given during the complete course.
    • Flashcard sets: There would be flash cards provided, comprising 10 words. These cards could be viewed any time, and act as a support to the vocabulary database. The words are accompanied by synonyms & antonyms and could be made as a set to memorize these words.
