Anandi Bai Gopal Rao Joshi was the first Indian Female Doctor and woman to obtain a degree in Western medicine.

In a rarity in the olden days or in during the 1800’s when medicine itself was in a stage of infancy, Anandibai Gopal Rao Joshi became a doctor. Anandi Joshi was born into a Brahmin family settled in Kalyan in today’s outskirts of Mumbai. Yamuna aka Anandi bai Joshi was born on 31st March 1865. At the age of 9, Yamuna was married to a widower, almost 20 years her senior. Her name was changed to Anandi from Yamuna after her marriage.

At the age of 14, anandi gave birth to a baby boy. However, the child did not survive owing to lack of medical care that he needed. The incident deeply touched Anandi Gopalrao Joshi and she decided to study medicine.

Her husband, Gopalrao Joshi encouraged her to study Medicine. Mr. Joshi was a very progressive thinker and encouraged his wife to study medicine. In those days, it was common for Brahmins to be well versed in Sanskrit. However, Mr. Joshi thought learning English was a better choice. To study medicine, she had to go to america, as there was a lack of infrastructure for studying medicine in India.

Despite her ill health, Anandi Joshi set sail for America all by herself, chaperoned by two English women and a physician couple known as Thorborns, who was well known to the Joshi family.

The public perception towards anandi bai Joshi was not good. The Hindus were against her studying medicine and the Christians encouraged her to study medicine and wanted her to convert to Christianity. She received several funds for her education in medicine.

In America, anandibai requested for Admission in the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Her request was accepted by the then dean of the College, Rachel Bodley, who accepted her request and enrolled her.

Anandi Gopalrao Joshi began her medical studies at the age of 19 and graduated in March 1886. Her thesis was titles, “Obstetrics among the Aryan Hindus”. The queen Victoria congratulated on the eve of her graduation as a Doctor.

On her return to India, in late 1886, there was a grand celebration to celebrate her having become a doctor. She was duly appointed the Physician in charge of the Female ward at the Albert Edward Hospital in the Princely State of Kolhapur.

In America, she contracted tuberculosis due to the cold weather and the diet. She died at a young age of 21 on 26th February 1887. Her death was mourned throughout India.
