Personal Life

She was born in 1903 in Mangalore. From an early age, she exhibited the characteristics of courage and morality. At 14 years old, she was married and got widowed two years later. She married Harindranath Chattopadhyay, a poet-cum-playwright-cum-actor, at the age of 20.

She broke age-old traditions by participating in widow-marriage and years later, filing for a divorce. Having an open mind, far beyond the reach of many, she had already displayed her practical and modern approach to life.

Professional Life

She was the first woman to run for a Legislative seat in India, in the year 1926. In the Salt Satyagraha held in 1930, she was one of the leading members of the 7-member-lead team.

After Indian independence, she spent her life rehabilitating the refugees. She revived the Indian handicrafts and handloom industry. This is considered her biggest contribution to our nation.
