The goal of GST is to replace complex tax structures with a simplified tax system. Before the GST was introduced by the government, India had followed an archaic tax system and had several taxes like Value-Added Tax (VAT), Central Excise, Service Tax, Entry Tax or Octroi, Customs Duty, Central Surcharge & Cess, Luxury Tax, Entertainment Tax, and Purchase Tax.

The Goods and Services tax is applicable to all goods and services sold in the market. There are various GST like Central GST, State GST, and Integrated GST. The various tax slabs for GST would be 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% for goods and services.

Also, with GST all states in India will have the same tax rate, overthrowing complex tax structures and bringing down logistics costs. First and Foremost, GST aims to simplify the complex tax regime that has been around in the country for decades. It will also bring down logistics costs and time taken by states in taxing goods due to the introduction of State GST.

GST also brings down the tax burden of small and medium businesses that are in the size of Rs. 20 to Rs. 50 lakhs. GST will also help in boosting country’s GDP and reduce the fiscal deficit or debt.

GST is a legislation that was lying pending with the government and tax authorities for several years and decades. It is a revolutionary tax regime that several governments gave a miss. A much-needed tax reform, however, could have had a better timing. While it will take time to take effect in India, it is bound to have its effect on the Indian economy.
