CLAT Eligibility Criteria 2020

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has announced the latest criteria of CLAT eligibility criteria for the upcoming law entrance exam that providing admissions to 3 year LLB, 5-year Integrated LLB and LLM courses. Before filling the CLAT Application Form 2020, candidates must ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria.

Latest: The CLAT 2020 Exam Date is scheduled on 22nd August 2020. This year, the CLAT Exam 2020 is conducted in online mode. 

  • If a candidate fails to meet eligibility criteria, they will be debarred from the procedure of recruitment without any further notice or intimation.
  • Candidates need to meet CLAT Eligibility criteria to get admissions in three-year LLB course and five-year integrated LLB course or LLM course.
  • The applications for CLAT 2020 Exam will remain open till 10th July  2020.
  • Intermediate candidates who scored 45% of marks are eligible for applying online CLAT Exam 2020.

CLAT Eligibility Criteria 2020

CLAT, the law entrance examination is being held annually for both undergraduate as well as the postgraduate courses. However, the CLAT Eligibility criteria will differ for undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

  • This year, there are certain changes in the examination. Candidates are suggested to have a look at the major Changes Introduced in CLAT Exam pattern 2020.
  • Students who have attained a minimum of 45% marks in 12thclass can register for the exam.
  • Candidates who belong to SC/ST category are eligible for 5% relaxation in minimum marks in the qualifying exam.
  • There is no age limit for appearing in the CLAT Exam 2020.

The candidates CLAT eligibility will be measured in terms of three major factors :

  1. Age Limit
  2. Educational Qualification
  3. Nationality

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria for 3-Year LLB Course

Candidates should meet the below mentioned CLAT 3-year Eligibility to get admission in undergraduate (UG ) level law courses. Gear up your preparation for CLAT by studying all the important topics as per the latest CLAT Syllabus 2020.

CLAT Nationality:

Candidates who are Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Foreign Nationals are eligible to apply for CLAT Exam 2020.

CLAT LLB Age Limit:

As per the updated guidelines, there will be no upper age limit for UG Programme in CLAT 2020. However, the minimum age limit should be above 17 years.

CLAT Eligibility – Educational Qualification:

  • Candidates must meet CLAT LLB Qualification to apply for law entrance examination.
  • Candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories must have secured 45% marks in Senior Secondary School Examination/ 12th Board Examination.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST categories should have secured 40% marks in the 12th

 CLAT Eligibility – General Criteria:

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Standard examination in March/April 2020 are also eligible to fill the application form for CLAT 2020 Exam. However, they should submit the result of 12th standard examination at the time of admission.

  • If candidates fail to submit the result at the time of admission, they will lose their admission through CLAT Exam 2020.
  • If there is a case of equal marks, the following tie-breaking procedure will be practised by the CLAT authorities:

i) Higher marks in the section on legal aptitude in the law entrance exam

ii) Higher age

iii) Computerized draw of lots.

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria for Five-Year Integrated LLB or LLM Courses

Candidates who are planning to apply for CLAT Exam 2020 can go through the below CLAT eligibility criteria for five-year integrated LLB or LLM courses.

CLAT Nationality:

Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Foreign Nationals are eligible to apply for CLAT 2020 Exam 2020.

CLAT Age Limit:

No upper age limit is set for CLAT 2020 Exam, which means candidates belonging to any age group can apply for five-year integrated LLB or LLM courses. But the minimum age limit to apply for the exam is above 20 years.

CLAT Eligibility – Educational Qualification:

Candidates belonging to General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI categories must have secured 50% of marks in an LLB degree or an equivalent examination whereas candidates belonging to SC/ST categories will be given 5% relaxation in minimum marks.

CLAT Eligibility – General Criteria:

  • Candidates appearing for the final year examination of their qualifying degree in the month of April/May 2020 are also eligible to apply for five-year integrated LLB or LLM courses.
  • In case of equal marks, the following tie-breaking procedure will be followed by the authorities.

i) Higher age

ii) Computerized draw of lots

CLAT 2020 Eligibility for NRI

The admissions for NRI/NRI sponsored category candidates are carried out on the basis of their CLAT merit and the seats will be allocated by concerned university under NRI Quota.

  • Candidates should contact the concerned university directly for admission formalities, eligibility, documents required and other related queries for seeking admission under NRI Quota.

WBNUJS, Kolkata (West Bengal) holds different conditions in order to give admissions, which are mentioned as follows:

  • A total of 17 seats are there for the aspirants who wish for admissions in the UG Programs. On the other hand, there will be no seat for the students seeking admissions for the PG Program.
  • CLAT Office will hold the duty of issuing the list of candidates who are eligible for the admission under this category.

Documents Required for NRI Candidates at the time of CLAT Admission

Candidates belonging to NRI category need to submit the below-mentioned documents at the time of CLAT admission.

  • Copy of Valid Indian Passport of the Student
  • Visas acquired in the last 12 months
  • Certificate from the local embassy stating that the person is an NRI/OCI or PIO Card

Documents required for NRI Sponsored Candidates at the time of Admission

  • Sponsor’s copy of Valid Indian Passport.
  • Visas obtained in the last 12 months by the Sponsor
  • Certificate from the local embassy stating that the Sponsor is an NRI/ OCI or PIO Card
  • An affidavit by the sponsor indicating the interest shown in the education affairs of the student and willingness to fund the education of student over the next 5 years.

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria- Number of Attempts

As per the notification, there is no upper age limit for the law exam, the CLAT Consortium allows candidates to appear for the exam as many times as they want. There are no fixed number of attempts for CLAT exam and this will be applicable for both UG and PG courses.

Can I give CLAT exam after 12th?
Yes,  you can apply for the CLAT entrance exam after 12th as it for 5 years unified law course which is BA LLB undergraduate course. As the exam will get conducted once a year, so the candidates have only one year to be a part of the UG course of LLB.
Can I give CLAT exam after 10th?
No, candidates cannot give the CLAT Exam after the 10th. It is the Undergraduate and Post Graduate program for the entrance exam for the unified course of Law.
How many seats are there in CLAT for general?
For admission through CLAT in unified courses of LAW, there a total of 2300 seats for undergraduate programs and 507 seats for a postgraduate program in 2020.
Which subject is best for CLAT?
There is no particular subject which is best for the CLAT exam, candidates have to go through full CLAT Syllabus which includes- Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability,  Legal Studies, and Political Science for the admission in the LAW College.
What is the pass mark in CLAT?
To be eligible for CLAT, the students must have obtained:

  • Forty-five percent (45%) marks in Qualifying Exam (Class XII examination) for the candidates who belong to Unreserved /OBC /Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories.
  • Forty Percent (40%) marks for the candidates of SC/ST categories.
