The exam is conducted for a duration of 2 hours. The CLAT 2018 has a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. CLAT Elementary Mathematics Weightage

CLAT is conducted in an online mode i.e. Computer Based Test. There will be 20 questions from Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) in CLAT exam. The weightage of this section is least i.e. 10%, as compared to other sections.

The questions will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice. Candidates will have to select one of the four options given, to mark the correct answer. As the level of questions are elementary, candidates can easily answer 15 to 18 questions easily.

Candidate will be awarded with 1 mark for every correct answer. Negative marking of 0.25 marks will be done in case of wrong answers. The questions will be based on fundamental mathematics concepts. Average:

You can check the below given illustration:

1. The average weight of ten students is increased by 1.8 kg when one student weighing 53 kg is replaced by a new student. Find the weight of the new student.

If we assume the sum of the weights of the other nine students to be x then the earlier average would have been (x + 53) / 10,

Since the weight of those nine students remains constant, and the new average is 1.8 kg more than the earlier one , we have

New Average – Old average = 1.8

(x+ unknown weight)/ 10 – (x + 53) / 10= 1.8

On solving we get

x+ unknown weight – x – 53 = 18

unknown weight – 53 = 18

unknown weight = 18 + 53

Unknown weight = 71 kgs.

To save time during exams we can use this formula directly

  • If the average is increased then

Weight of new comer = weight of the person who left+ total increase in weight

Total increase in weight = number of men * increase in average weight

  • If the average is decreased then

Weight of new comer = weight of the person who left – total decrease in weight

The total decrease in weight is = number of men * decrease in average weight

Time & Work

  • These problems mainly deal with the number of workers and the time in which they can complete a given amount of work. The following principles need to be kept in mind while solving such problems.
  • If a person can do a given amount of work in n days, the amount of work he does in 1 day is 1/nth of the total work.
  • If the amount of work he does in one day is 1/n, the number of days he will take to complete the total work is n days.The following rules determine how the quantities of time, work and number of men vary with respect to each other.
  • If we fix the number of men, the work done is proportional to the time.
  • If we fix the work, the time is inversely proportional to the number of men.

More men= fewer days are required.

Less number of men= more days are required.

1. If A can do some work in 9 days and B can do the same work in 6 days, in how many days can both of them do it together?

The work is done by A in 9 days

The amount of work done by A in 1 day = 1/9th of the total work

In the same way, the amount of work done by B in 1 day = 1/6th of the total work

Amount of work done by A and B in one day = A’s one day work + B’s one day work

  • 1/9 + 1/6
  • 5/18th of the total work
  • Therefore, number of days required to complete the job are 18/5 = 3.6 days

Time & Speed

The time taken to pass a given object

  • A train x metres long, while crossing a point object ( like a man, pole or tree) takes the same time as it would to cross the distance of x metres.
  • If the train ( of length x metres) has to cross a platform or bridge of length y metres the time taken will be same as the time taken to cover the distance of ( x+y) metres.

Relative speed

  • If two vehicles of speeds u km/hr and v km/hr are moving in the opposite direction, their relative speed is (u+v) km/hr
  • If two vehicles of speeds u km/hr and v km/hr are moving in the same direction, their relative speed is (u-v) km/hr, where u>v

The time taken to overtake

  • If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the same direction at speeds of u km/hr and v km/hr, the time taken by the faster train to completely overtake the slower train is (x+y)/(u-v) km/hr where u km/hr is the speed of the faster train.
  • If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the opposite directions at speeds of u km/hr and v km/hr, the time taken by them to completely pass each other is (x+y)/(u+v) km/hr.
