CAT Exam Analysis 2017 – Slot 1 & Slot 2

The Common Admission Test was held on 26th November this year. IIM Lucknow conducted the test this year. And they have kept the same exam format as last year. English Language was easy in difficulty level whereas Reasoning Ability section was tough and lengthy. And Quantitative Aptitude section was easy to moderate. Slot 1

English Language Analysis

Reading Comprehension

  • There were five (5) RC passages.
  • Three passages had six (6) questions each.
  • Two passages had three (3) questions each.
  • Thus RC contributed to 24 out of total 34 questions in VARC section.
  • Passages were from topics such as Economics, Culture, Biology; they were all easy to read
    irrespective of having prior knowledge in those.
  • Questions were quite different from each other.
  • Three questions were information based which could be answered easily.
  • Other questions on the other hand were a test of how well one understood the passages.
  • Some questions also tested in-depth understanding.
  • Three questions were inferential in nature.
  • Overall, 6 questions were easy, 18 were moderately tough, 6 were quite tough.

Verbal Ability

  • Most questions were on Verbal Logic; all TITA types hence had no negative marking.
  • There were four (4) non MCQ subjective para jumble questions that were a little difficult.
  • Experts opine that these should have been attempted towards the end.
  • There were three (3) non-MCQ TITA paragraph odd man out questions. They too were
    moderately tough as options were quite close to each other.
  • Also, this section had three (3) summary questions that were MCQ based. Two of those were
    easy.

Overall, 21-23 attempts may get a percentile over 95 whereas 26-27 attempts may get 99 percentile or more.

Reasoning Ability Analysis

Data Interpretation section was tough, overall. Only a few sets were a bit easy. It was lengthy and time-consuming.

Quantitative Aptitude Analysis

  • Most questions were asked from algebra and arithmetic section.
  • From Algebra, most questions were on Inequalities and Quadratic Equations.
  • From Arithmetic, questions were from Profit and Loss, Time Speed Distance.
  • In one question from Geometry, the focus was on Permutation.

Slot 2

English Language Analysis

Reading Comprehension

  • There were five (5) RC passages.
  • Similar options made attempting passages, time-consuming.
  • Passages were on biology, creativity, current technological trends, economics, typewriters.
  • Around sixteen (16) questions were based on main idea and inference.
  • Around twelve (12) questions had options that were quite similar.
  • Other questions were factual in nature.
  • Thus RC contributed to 24 out of total 34 questions in this section.

Verbal Ability

  • Four (4) subjective para jumble questions were time-consuming.
  • Three (3) odd sentence para jumbles were very easy.
  • Summary questions were three (3) in number and they had negative marks.

A good number of attempts for this section is 25 – 27.

Reasoning Ability Analysis

Sets on pizza and chess were comparatively easy. Sets on asset management and teas had 3 questions that were doable. Experts have said that airplane set was doable but lengthy. You have to attempt around 15 questions with more than 85% accuracy in this section to fetch 99 percentile.

Quantitative Aptitude Analysis

  • The paper had maximum questions from the Algebra and Arithmetic section.
  • From Algebra, most questions were on Inequalities and Quadratic Equations.
  • From Arithmetic, questions were from Commercial Math, Ratio, Time Speed Distance.
