The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a National level MBA Entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM). IIM Lucknow will be conducting CAT 2017 on November 26. With just few months to go for the exam, here are some tips and strategies for all the CAT aspirants from Antriksh Johri who cracked CAT 2016 with 99.66 Percentile. The first step towards preparation is to have the complete knowledge of the Syllabus. Common Admission Test is a computer based test of 180 minutes duration carrying 100 multiple choice objective type questions. CAT analyses the skills of the aspirant in the following four sections: Quantitative Ability, Verbal and Reading Comprehension, Logical & Analytical Reasoning and Data Interpretation. 

Antriksh in the CAT 2016 Topper Interview recommends aspirants to do their Math carefully. Candidates should strengthen and be thorough with all the basic concepts in Maths. Best way to do that is to brush up the concepts from 10th and 12th standards. 

  • Learn tables, basic and advanced formulas and solve methods and learn shortcuts from previous years’ exam papers.

  • Make as many calculations as possible to help you solve the problems faster and save your time during the exam.

  • Focus on the following topics- Number system, Arithmetic, Geometry & Mensuration, Logarithms, Algebra, Permutations and Combinations, Modern Mathematics, Trigonometry, Probability, Sequences & series and Set theory.

Another crucial part of CAT preparation is Reading. Better readers have a higher chance of cracking the exam as well as the interview. It is the most crucial aspect as it improves your chances in Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension section. Antriksh used to read books both from fiction and non-fiction and also newspapers to understand language and its usage. It is recommended to dedicate minimum 1-2 hours every day in reading editorial section of newspapers like The Hindu and The Economic Times. Also read Magazines and articles which are available online. Reading will also improve your vocabulary. Focus on reading comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Critical and Verbal reasoning and Paragraph completion.
