Solve Direction Test Questions for CLAT 2024: Know the Concept of Directions

Direction Tests are introduced to test the sense of direction of the candidate. This test is to ascertain the final direction or distance between two points.

It is an independent relationship between two points in space that specifies either position with respect to the others. Hence, it is the relationship by which the orientation of any position with respect to another position is established.

The concept of Directions is based on two types of directions that are -

1. Prime Direction.
2. Sub-Direction.

1. Prime Direction

These are also known as main directions. Directions that work according to the movement of the Sun are known as the prime or main direction.

We have four prime or main directions, i.e., North, South, East, and West.

A diagrammatic representation of such directions is as below.

Prime direction can also be classified into two types, i.e.,

(i). Horizontal Direction - The direction that refers to East or West is known as horizontal direction.

(ii). Vertical Direction - Directions that refer to North or South are known as vertical directions.

2. Sub-Direction

The direction between two prime directions is known as a sub-direction. As N - E is between North and East directions, S - E is between South and East direction, and so on.

We have four sub - directions, i.e., North-East (N - E), South-East (S - E), South-West (S - W), and North-West (N - W).

(1). Always use the direction planes as the reference for all the questions.

(2). Always mark the starting and end points differently from the other points.

(3). Always be attentive while taking right / or left turns.

(4). While solving the direction test, you should remember the diagram below as a reference.

(5). You should know basic geometric rules, such as the Pythagoras Theorem.

Question 1: The door of my house faces the east direction. From the backside of my house, I drove straight 100 meters, then turned towards the right and drove for 100 meters, then turned towards the left and drove for 50 meters and reached my destination. In What direction am I from the starting point?

(a). North - West.

(b). West.

(c). North.

(d). East.

Answer: (a). North - West

Explanation: 

In this question, it is given that the house door faces east. 

Then, there is a door at the backside from where the person has driven.

The backside door is in the west because the opposite of the east is west. 

From the backside door, the person drove straight 100 meters, then turned right and drove for 100 meters, then turned left and drove 50 meters and reached his destination.

We have to find out what his direction is from the starting point.

Question 2: I go 100 meters North from my house, then I turn left and go 200 meters, then turning left, I go 200 meters, then again turning left, I go 100 meters, and then turning left again, I go 100 meters. In which direction from my house? 

(a). West 

(b). East 

(c). North 

(d). South

Answer: (a). West

Explanation: 

In the question, it is given that the person is starting from his house.

The starting point is his house, and we will consider the starting point in the center, then he will go more towards North for 100 meters then he has taken a left and go 200 meters, and then he will turn left and go 200 meters, then again he turns left and go 100 meters, and then he turns left and go 100 meters more.

Question 3: Ram is facing North-West. He turns in a clockwise direction by 90 degrees, then 180 degrees in the anti-clockwise direction, and then another 90 degrees in the same direction. Which direction is he facing now?

Explanation:

In this question, it is given that ram is facing northwest, and then he turns clockwise direction by 90 degrees, 180 degrees in the anti-clockwise direction, and then another 90 degrees in the same direction.

Question 4: One morning after sunrise, Vikram and Shailesh were standing on a lawn with their backs to each other. Vikram’s shadow fell exactly towards the left-hand side. Which direction was Shailesh facing?

If the shadow falls in the left or right direction in any question, then in 99% of the questions, the answer will be either the North or South direction.

So in this question also, the answer will be either south or north.

See, in this question, the shadow of both Vikram and Shailesh will be in the west direction because, in the question, it is mentioned that they are standing on the lawn in the morning after sunrise.

Vikram is facing towards the north because it is mentioned in the question that Vikram’s shadow is falling exactly towards the left-hand side.

And Shailesh will be facing the South side because they stand with their backs toward each other.

Question 5: A child crawls 20 feet towards North, turns right and crawls 30 feet, turns right again, and crawls 35 feet. He turns left now and crawls 15 feet. He turns left again and crawls 15 feet. Finally, he turns to his left to crawl another 15 feet. How far is he from his starting point, and in which direction?

(a). 45 feet North-East.

(b). 30 feet East.

(c). 30 feet West.

(d). 15 feet West.

Answer: (b). 30 Feet East.

Explanation: 

In this question, it is given that a child crawls 20 feet toward the North, turns right and crawls 30 feet, turns right again, and crawls 35 feet. He turns left now and crawls 15 feet. He turns left again and crawls 15 feet. Finally, he turns to his left to crawl another 15 feet. 

And,

We have discovered how far he is from the starting point and in which direction he is now.

The distance between the starting and ending point is 30 feet, and the child is facing the East.

Question 6: Baba Ramdev is doing an exercise with his legs up and head down. He is facing East. In which direction will his left hand be?

(a). East.

(b). South.

(c). North.

(d). West.

Answer: (b) South.

Explanation: 

In this question, Baba Ramdev is doing an exercise with his legs up and head down. He is facing East. 

And,

We have to find out in which direction his left hand is.

Baba Ramdev’s face is in the East direction, as the question shows.

If he is facing East, then your right hand will be in the south direction. 

But Baba Ramdev is not in a normal position. He is doing exercise with his legs up and heads down.

Question 7: Y travels 15 kilometers to the south, then he travels 5 kilometers towards the West, then 18 kilometers towards the North, then 3 kilometers towards the south, then 5 kilometers towards the East. How far is he from the starting point?

(a). 6 Kilometres.

(b). 3 Kilometres.

(c). 0 Kilometres

(d). 9 Kilometres.

Answer: (c). 0 Kilometres.

Explanation: 

In this question, it is given that Y travels 15 kilometers to the south. He travels 5 kilometers towards the West, 18 kilometers towards the North, 3 kilometers towards the south, and 5 kilometers towards the East. 

So, 

We must find out how far he is from the starting point now.

As per the above direction test diagram, it is clear that Y is 0 kilometers far from his starting point.

Question 8: The front door of Kiran's house is towards the south. From the backside of the house, she walks 50 meters straight, then turns towards the left and walks 100 meters, and after that, turns right and stops after walking 100 meters. Now Kiran is facing which direction?

(a). East.

(b). South.

(c). West

(d). North.

Answer: (d). North.

Answer: (d). North and West.

In this question, it is given that two ladies and two men are playing bridge and seated at the tables north, east, south, and west. No lady is facing east. People sitting opposite each other are not of the same sex. One man is facing south.

Question 14. Sunil’s school bus is facing North when it reaches his school. After starting from Sunil’s house, it turned right twice and then left before reaching the school. What direction was the bus facing when it left the bus stop in front of Sunil’s House?

(a). West

(b). North

(c). South

(d). East

Answer: (a). West.

Explanation:

In this question, Sunil’s school bus faces North when it reaches his school. After starting from Sunil’s house, it turned right twice and then left before reaching the school. 

We must find out what direction the bus was facing when it left the bus stop in front of Sunil’s House.

In this type of question, where the exact direction is not given, you can take any of the 4 directions, i.e., north, south, east, or west.

Question 15: One evening before sunset Khushi and Divya were talking to each other face to face. If the Divya shadow was exactly to the right of Khushi, which direction was Divya facing?

Question 16: Two buses start from opposite points of the main road, 150 km apart. The first bus runs for 25 km, takes a right turn, and then runs for 15 km. It then turns left, runs for another 25 km, and then turns and goes to reach the main road. In the meantime, due to a minor breakdown, the other bus has run only 35 km along the main road. What would be the distance between the two buses at this point? 

(a). 65 km

(b). 75 km

(c). 80 km

(d). 85 km

Answer: (a). 65 Kms

Explanation:

In this question, two buses start from opposite points of the main road, 150 km apart. The first bus runs for 25 km, takes a right turn, and then runs for 15 km. It then turns left, runs for another 25 km, and then turns and goes to reach the main road. In the meantime, due to a minor breakdown, the other bus has run only 35 km along the main road. 

And, 

Do we have to find out what would be the distance between the two buses at this point?

As per the above direction graph, bus I covered a 50 km distance, and bus II covered 35 km distance.

So the remaining distance that they had to cover was 50 + 35 - 150 = 65 km

Direction (Question 17 - Question 18): Study the following information carefully and answer the question below: All city roads are perpendicular or parallel to one another. The roads are all straight Roads A, B, C, D, and E are parallel to one another. Roads G, H, I, J, K, L., and M, are parallel to one another.

(i). Road A is 1 km. East of road B. 

(ii). Road B ½ is km. West of road C.

(iii). Road D is 1 km. West of road E. 

(iv). Road G is ½ km. South of road H.

(v). Road I is 1 km. North of road J. 

(vi). Road K is ½ km north of road L.

(vii). Road K is 1 km south of road M.

Question 17: Which is necessarily true?

(a). E and B intersect. 

(b). D is 2 Km. West of B.

(c). D is at least 2 Km. West of A

(d). M is 1.5 km. North of L.

Answer: (d). M is 1.5 km. North of L. 

Question 18: If road E is between B and C, then what is the distance between A and D?

(a). ½ km.

Question 19: Rahul walked 2km west of his house and then turned south, covering 4km. Finally, he moved 3km towards the east and then again 1km west. How far is he from the initial position?

(a). 4 km

Rahul starts from his house at A, moves 2km west up to B, then 4m to the south up to C, 3km east up to D, and finally 1km west up to E; thus, his distance from the initial position A will be AE.

And, AE = BC = 4km.

Question 20: Shivam walks 10 km towards the north. From there, he walks 6 km towards the south. Then he walks 3 km towards the east. How far and in which direction is he with reference to his starting point?

(a). 4 km southwest 

(b). 6 km Southeast

(c). 7 km North - west

(d). 5 km northeast.

Answer: (d). 5 km North-East.

 In this question, Shivam walks 10 km towards the north. From there, he walks 6 km towards the south. Then he walks 3 km towards the east.
