• पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र की बहाली पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र दशक आधिकारिक तौर पर शुरू किया गया है, जो 2021 से 2030 तक चलेगा। पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र की बहाली पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र दशक का नेतृत्व संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम (यूएनईपी) और संयुक्त राष्ट्र के खाद्य और कृषि संगठन द्वारा किया जाएगा।संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने 2019 के प्रस्ताव में इसकी घोषणा की थी।
• लोगों और प्रकृति के लाभ के लिए दुनिया भर में लाखों हेक्टेयर पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र का संरक्षण और पुनरुद्धार, यह बदले में सभी सतत विकास लक्ष्यों की उपलब्धि में योगदान देगा।
• पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र की बहाली के दशक के लिए एक बहु-भागीदार ट्रस्ट फंड भी शुरू किया गया है। जर्मनी पहला देश है जिसने इस फंड के लिए 14 मिलियन यूरो का फंड दिया है।
• संयुक्त राष्ट्र दशक की शुरूआत का समर्थन करने के लिए, एक रिपोर्ट भी जारी की गई है जो इस तरह के वैश्विक बहाली प्रयास की आवश्यकता को परिभाषित करती है।

आर डिसले विश्व बैंक के शिक्षा सलाहकार नियुक्त

• रंजीतसिंह डिसले को जून 2021 से जून 2024 तक विश्व बैंक शिक्षा सलाहकार के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया है। वह 2020 में ग्लोबल टीचर अवार्ड से सम्मानित होने वाले पहले भारतीय हैं, जो अब विश्व द्वारा शुरू किए गए कोच प्रोजेक्ट पर काम करेंगे। मार्च 2021 में बैंक, परियोजना का उद्देश्य 'शिक्षक पेशेवर विकास में सुधार करके देशों को सीखने में तेजी लाने में मदद करना है।'

विश्व महासागर दिवस 2021: 8 जून

• विश्व महासागर दिवस प्रतिवर्ष 8 जून को विश्व स्तर पर मनाया जाता है। यह दिन हमारे जीवन में समुद्र के महत्व और उन तरीकों के बारे में वैश्विक जागरूकता बढ़ाने के लिए मनाया जाता है जिनके माध्यम से हम इसकी रक्षा कर सकते हैं। दिवस का उद्देश्य आम जनता को महासागर पर मानवीय कार्यों के प्रभाव के बारे में बताना, महासागर के लिए नागरिकों के एक विश्वव्यापी आंदोलन को विकसित करना और दुनिया के महासागरों के स्थायी प्रबंधन के लिए एक परियोजना पर दुनिया की आबादी को जुटाना और एकजुट करना है।

टाइम्स हायर एजुकेशन एशिया यूनिवर्सिटी रैंकिंग 2021 जारी

• टाइम्स हायर एजुकेशन एशिया यूनिवर्सिटी रैंकिंग 2021, तीन भारतीय विश्वविद्यालयों ने शीर्ष 100 सूची में स्थान हासिल किया। IISc बैंगलोर, IIT रोपड़ और IIT इंदौर ने एशिया के शीर्ष 100 विश्वविद्यालयों में रैंक हासिल की है। पिछले साल की तरह, एक भी भारतीय विश्वविद्यालय ने शीर्ष 10 में जगह नहीं बनाई। आईआईएससी बैंगलोर 37 वें स्थान पर रहा। शीर्ष 100 विश्वविद्यालयों में IIT रोपड़ को 55वें और IIT इंदौर को 78वें स्थान पर रखा गया है।
• सिंघुआ विश्वविद्यालय, चीन ने एशिया विश्वविद्यालय रैंकिंग 2021 में पहला स्थान हासिल किया है। दूसरा स्थान चीन की पेकिंग विश्वविद्यालय ने भी हासिल किया है। तीसरा और पांचवां रैंक सिंगापुर के विश्वविद्यालयों ने हासिल किया है। वहीं, हांगकांग यूनिवर्सिटी चौथे स्थान पर है।

सतत विकास लक्ष्य रिपोर्ट

• साल 2015 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के 193 सदस्य देशों द्वारा 2030 के एजेंडे के एक भाग के रूप में अपनाए गए 17 सतत विकास लक्ष्यों (SDG) में भारत की रैंक पिछले साल से दो स्थान गिरकर 117 हो गई है। भारत रैंकिंग में चार दक्षिण एशियाई देशों भूटान, नेपाल, श्रीलंका और बांग्लादेश से नीचे है
• भारत की पर्यावरण रिपोर्ट 2021 की स्थिति से पता चला है कि भारत की रैंक पिछले साल 115 थी और मुख्य रूप से भूखमरी को ख़त्म करने और खाद्य सुरक्षा (एसडीजी 2) प्राप्त करने, लैंगिक समानता (एसडीजी 5) प्राप्त करने और लचीला बुनियादी ढांचे के निर्माण, को बढ़ावा देने जैसी प्रमुख चुनौतियों के कारण दो स्थानों की गिरावट आई थी। हालाँकि समावेशी और सतत औद्योगीकरण और नवाचार को बढ़ावा देना (एसडीजी 9) देश में बना हुआ है।

विनोद कापरी की पुस्तक '1232 किमी: द लॉन्ग जर्नी होम'

• फिल्म निर्माता विनोद कापरी की ‘1232 km: The Long Journey Home’ नामक एक नई पुस्तक जो बिहार के सात प्रवासी श्रमिकों की यात्रा का वर्णन करती है, जो अपनी साइकिल पर घर वापस आए और सात दिनों के बाद अपने गंतव्य तक पहुंचे। यह पुस्तक हार्पर कॉलिन्स द्वारा प्रकाशित की गई है। मार्च 2020 में लगे देशव्यापी लॉकडाउन ने हजारों प्रवासी कामगारों को हजारों किलोमीटर पैदल चलकर अपने पैतृक गाँव लौटने के लिए मजबूर कर दिया।
• कापरी इन सात प्रवासी कामगारों - रितेश, आशीष, राम बाबू, सोनू, कृष्णा, संदीप और मुकेश के साथ उत्तर प्रदेश के गाजियाबाद से बिहार के सहरसा तक की 1,232 किलोमीटर की यात्रा पर गए। यह उस साहस की कहानी है और साथ ही सात लोगों की हताशा की कहानी है जो पुलिस की लाठियों और अपमानों को झेलते हुए अपने घर पहुंचने के लिए भूख और थकावट से जूझते रहे हैं। लेखक के अनुसार, वह यह जानने के लिए उत्सुक थे कि ऐसी विषम परिस्थितियों में बिना भोजन या बिना किसी मदद के मजदूरों का 1,232 किलोमीटर का रास्ता कैसे तय किया। वह उन्हें करीब से देखना चाहता था।

INTERNATIONAL

UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration officially launched

• The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration has been officially launched, which will run from 2021 to 2030. United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration will be co-led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in a 2019 resolution.
• Protection and revival of millions of hectares of ecosystems all around the world for the benefit of people and nature. This in turn will contribute to the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals.
• A Multi-Partner Trust Fund has also been launched for the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Germany is the first country to provide funding of Euro 14 million towards this fund.
• In order to support the launch of the UN Decade, a report has also been released which defines the need of having such a global restoration effort.

SPORTS

Germany’s footballer Sami Khedira announced retirement

• Germany’s FIFA World Cup-winner, Sami Khedira has announced retirement. He began his career at VfB Stuttgart and helped them win the league title in the 2006-07 season before moving to Real Madrid, where he won the league and Champions League in a trophy-laden spell. He played 77 games for Germany scoring seven goals and helped them win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Sergio Perez of Red Bull wins Formula 1's Azerbaijan Grand Prix

• Red Bull's Sergio Perez won a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix with both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton failing to finish. This was the first win for Perez since joining Red Bull.
• Sebastian Vettel for Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly for Alpha Tauri completed the unexpected podium. Verstappen crashed with five laps to go and the race at his mercy. Hamilton then locked up at the restart when on target for the second.

APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS

R Disale Appointed World Bank Education Advisor

• Ranjitsinh Disale has been appointed as the World Bank Education advisor, starting from June 2021 to June 2024. He is the first Indian to have been awarded the Global Teacher Award in 2020, will now be working on the Coach Project, launched by the World Bank in March 2021. The project's aim is to 'help countries accelerate learning by improving teacher professional development.'
• Disale is from Paritewadi Village in the Solapur district of Maharashtra. He had initially wanted to become an engineer, but later took up the teacher's training programme. He is the first Indian to have been awarded the Global Teacher Award in 2020. He won the award in recognition of this work in promoting the education of girls.

Vishwavir Ahuja New MD and CEO of, RBL Bank

• The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Vishwavir Ahuja as the Managing Director and CEO of RBL Bank for a one-year period with effect from June 30, 2021.
• He has been the Managing Director & CEO of RBL Bank since June 30, 2010. Before RBL Bank, Ahuja was the Managing Director & CEO of Bank of America, India.

World Oceans Day 2021: 8 June

• World Ocean Day is observed globally on 8th June every year. This day is observed to raise global awareness about the importance of the ocean in our lives and the ways through which we can protect it. The purpose of the Day is to tell the general public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
• “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2021, as well as a declaration of intentions that launches a decade of challenges to get the Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030. This year's theme is especially relevant in the lead-up to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which will run from 2021 to 2030. The Decade will strengthen international cooperation to develop scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society.

NTPC Joins UN’s CEO Water Mandate for Water Conservation

• India’s largest power utility, NTPC Ltd, under the Ministry of Power, has become a signatory to the prestigious UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate, that focus on efficient water management. The initiative also provides a platform for companies to partner with like-minded businesses, UN agencies, public authorities, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders.
• The CEO Water Mandate is an initiative by the UN Global Compact, designed to assist companies in the development, implementation, and disclosure of comprehensive water strategies and policies, to better their water and sanitation agendas as part of long term Sustainable Development Goals.

RANKING

Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2021 released

• Times Higher Education Asia university rankings 2021, three Indian universities secured positions in the top 100 list. IISc Bangalore, IIT Ropar and IIT Indore have secured ranks among the top 100 universities in Asia. Like last year, not a single Indian varsity made it to the elite top 10. IISc Bangalore ranked at 37th position. IIT Ropar is placed at 55th rank and IIT Indore at 78th rank among the top 100 universities.
• Tsinghua University, China has gained the first position in the Asia university rankings 2021. The second place is also secured by China’s Peking University. The third and fifth ranks have been secured by Singapore varsities. Whereas, the University of Hong Kong is at fourth rank.

Sustainable Development Goals report

• India’s rank has slipped by two places from last year to 117 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted as a part of the 2030 agenda by 193 United Nations member states in 2015. India ranks below four South Asian countries: Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
• The State of India’s Environment Report 2021 revealed that India’s rank was 115 last year and dropped by two places primarily because of major challenges like ending hunger and achieving food security (SDG 2), achieving gender equality (SDG 5) and building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation (SDG 9) remain in the country.

Book ‘1232 km: The Long Journey Home’ by Vinod Kapri

• A new book titled ‘1232 km: The Long Journey Home’ by filmmaker Vinod Kapri chronicles the journey of seven migrant workers from Bihar, who journeyed back home on their bicycles and reached their destination after seven days. The book is published by Harper Collins. The nationwide lockdown in March 2020 forced thousands of migrant workers to return to their native villages by covering thousands of kilometres on foot.
• Kapri accompanied these seven migrant workers — Ritesh, Ashish, Ram Babu, Sonu, Krishna, Sandeep and Mukesh — on their 1,232-km journey from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh to Saharsa in Bihar. It is a story of courage as well as the desperation of seven men braving police lathis and insults, battling hunger and exhaustion to reach their home. According to the author, he was curious to know what makes labourers’ cycle 1,232 kilometres without food or any help in such extreme circumstances. He wanted to see them up close.
